Kathmandu, October 16
The Medical Education Commission has determined the number of seats for various levels of medical education for the 2026/27 academic session.
The commission’s 28th meeting, held at Singha Durbar on Friday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, decided to increase the number of medical education seats at government medical colleges.
The meeting determined seats for undergraduate, Doctorate of Medicine (DM)/Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) and National Board of Medical Specialities (NBMS) subspecialty programmes.
According to a member who attended the meeting, the overall number of seats has increased compared to the previous academic session. However, detailed figures showing the number of additional seats by subject and academic level were not presented at the meeting.
“The figures showed an increase in the total number of seats nationwide, but we could not see the detailed breakdown of how many seats were added at each level,” the member said.
The commission stated that seat allocation had been carried out in accordance with the relevant criteria, but the subject-wise and institution-wise details were not clearly presented.
The meeting also discussed subsistence allowances for MBBS and BDS interns. A task force under the commission will be formed to study the issue, according to a meeting participant.
However, no concrete decision has been made on the interns’ allowances. The process of forming the task force is likely to proceed through the commission’s executive committee.
Commission Member Secretary Hari Niraula confirmed that the number of seats at government institutions had increased slightly this year, with adjustments made across various programmes.
