Fazlul Haq Amini, the prime accused in the murder case filed over the mob beating of Wahiduzzaman Shamim in Satkhira’s Debhata, gave a confessional statement before a court yesterday.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Nusrat Jahan of Satkhira Judicial Magistrate Court-3 recorded his statement.
According to court sources, Amini claimed in his statement that Shamim had “hurt religious sentiments”, but said there had been no intention to kill him. He described the incident as “accidental”. He also disclosed names of other alleged participants. Court Inspector Nazmul Haq said Amini was sent to Satkhira District Jail afterwards.
Earlier, Amini told journalists at Satkhira Sadar Police Station around noon that “Shamim was an atheist, but I had no intention of killing him. It happened accidentally.”
Law enforcers arrested him on Saturday night from Faridpur village in Kaliganj upazila, where he had been hiding at a relative’s house, said investigating officer Sub-Inspector Al Amin of Debhata Police Station.
Shamim was beaten in two separate attacks on October 13, including one at Debhata Upazila Health Complex, where police had taken him after rescuing him from the first assault.
His elder brother, Md Abdul Jalil, filed a murder case with Debhata police on Thursday, naming 10 people, including Amini, and 200 to 250 unidentified suspects.
