The Union Home Ministry has extended the deployment of 273 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies in Delhi until October 31 for the second time, citing the possibility of “flash protests” by political and other groups, official sources said on Friday.
The forces were brought to the national capital earlier this month in view of protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the Delhi Police and the respective CAPFs on October 22 to coordinate the deployment, the sources told PTI.
The extension was approved at the Delhi Police's request, with officials citing the possibility of flash protests at various “sensitive” locations across the city. The ministry had sanctioned a similar extension in mid-October, they said.
The Delhi Police told the MHA that the continued deployment was necessary to maintain law and order amid the possibility of sudden demonstrations by political and other outfits. The ministry approved the request, the sources said.
Of the 273 companies that will remain deployed alongside the Delhi Police, 125 belong to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including 20 women personnel units; 46 to the Border Security Force (BSF); 39 to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP); 31 to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB); 20 to the Rapid Action Force (RAF); and 12 to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
A CAPF company has a sanctioned strength of 100 personnel, though its effective operational strength is around 70-72 personnel.
Parts of Delhi witnessed CJP protests on October 9, with demonstrators seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties later staged protests with the same demand.
The CJP also held a “Lehra Do Tiranga” demonstration on October 16.
