The veteran politician was all smiles as he cut his birthday cake while dressed in hospital uniform, surrounded by his two wives, Dr Ann Oburu and Mama Judith Oburu, alongside friends and family who joined him for the surprise celebration.
Oburu turned 83 on Thursday, October 15, with the occasion providing a glimpse of him amid growing public concern about his health following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
What Oburu said on his birthday
In a message reflecting on the coincidence of his birthday and Raila’s death, Oburu described October 15 as a date that now carries both personal joy and profound grief.
“Today, October 15th, is far more than just a date on the calendar, it is a sacred intersection of life and eternity,” he wrote.
He said sharing his birthday with the date his younger brother departed was a reminder of the bond they shared, adding that physical separation could not break their brotherhood.
“To have been born on this day and for you to have departed on this same date is a divine testament to the invisible thread that binds our souls. Physical separation cannot touch a brotherhood written in the heavens,” Oburu stated.
He also paid tribute to Raila, saying he continued to carry his brother’s spirit and that their connection transcended death.
“Rest peacefully in the light, my brother,” he added.
The Siaya senator expressed gratitude to his family, hospital staff and political allies for organising the surprise celebration and standing by him during the difficult period.
Oburu also acknowledged the ODM fraternity, represented at the celebration by party trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, alongside his domestic staff and the team at Pawaa Centre.
The birthday celebration came hours after Oburu’s speech was read by Kisii Governor Simba Arati during a memorial event for Raila in Migwenaa, Siaya County.
