Abreu Secures 2026 Title as Giovanni Scelzi Wins Season Finale in Texas
Rico Abreu is a High Limit Racing champion once again. Abreu clinched the 2026 Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing championship Saturday night at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, securing his second consecutive series title after a dramatic season ending battle with Giovanni Scelzi.
The championship capped another impressive season for Abreu and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing. Despite facing late-season pressure and seeing his points advantage shrink dramatically over the final weeks, Abreu delivered when it mattered most and finished the season on top.
Abreu Holds Off Scelzi’s Championship Charge
Abreu entered the final weekend with a 45 point advantage over Scelzi, but the championship fight became much tighter after Scelzi won Friday night’s feature. That victory cut the gap to 36 points and put additional pressure on Abreu heading into Saturday’s finale.
The reigning champion responded by doing enough to protect his lead and secure the title. Abreu needed to finish 16th or better to clinch the championship, giving him a clear target entering the final race of the season.
Scelzi, driving for Spire Motorsports, kept the pressure on throughout the finale. The championship contender battled near the front and ultimately captured the race victory, but his strong finish was not enough to overcome Abreu’s points advantage.
Scelzi Wins the Race, but Abreu Takes the Crown
Scelzi’s victory provided a dramatic ending to the season, but the championship belonged to Abreu. The result highlighted the importance of consistency across a long sprint car campaign, particularly when the title battle comes down to the final event.
Abreu had built his championship campaign through race wins, strong finishes and the ability to recover from difficult nights. Even after losing a significant portion of his points lead late in the season, he maintained enough of an advantage to finish the job.
Another Championship for Rico Abreu
The back-to-back titles reinforce Abreu’s position among the leading drivers in sprint car racing. His ability to withstand Scelzi’s late charge and deliver another championship-winning season demonstrated the consistency required to succeed in High Limit Racing.
Scelzi leaves Texas with the season finale victory, but Abreu leaves with the bigger prize: the 2026 championship and another year at the top of the series.
