Ryan Clark challenges Stephen A. Smith over Lane Johnson’s retirement

Ryan Clark has defended Lane Johnson after Stephen A. Smith questioned the Philadelphia Eagles tackle’s decision to retire during the 2026 NFL season. Speaking on The Pivot Podcast, Clark said that a person’s intentions matter less than the effect their words have on others.

He also praised Johnson for putting his mental health and family first, while pointing out why Smith’s comments deserved criticism despite his later apology.

Clark made his position clear while discussing Johnson’s retirement and the reaction to it. He said he was proud of the veteran offensive tackle for choosing what was best for him rather than forcing himself to continue playing football.“Lane Johnson’s football career has been about intent and impact. And I think more people should understand that,” Clark said on The Pivot Podcast. He also welcomed Smith’s apology but stressed that good intentions do not erase the effect a person’s words can have.“Your intent doesn’t matter. It’s about your impact. It’s about what people see in you, how you’ve changed people’s lives,” Clark added. His comments came after Smith faced criticism for the way he discussed Johnson’s decision on ESPN’s First Take. On October 7, one day after the retirement announcement, Smith questioned why Johnson had chosen to walk away when the Eagles were struggling through a difficult stretch of the season.

The Eagles were 2-2 at the time and had suffered back-to-back losses. Smith also pointed to the team’s injury problems and the absence of key players, including A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, while questioning Johnson’s timing.During the discussion, Smith repeatedly referred to Johnson’s mental health in a sarcastic tone. That approach drew criticism because Johnson had clearly explained that his emotional well-being and family priorities were behind his decision.Clark’s response focused on the difference between questioning a player’s timing and dismissing the personal reasons behind such a major life choice. For him, Johnson’s decision showed that looking after yourself can matter more than staying in a sport, even when your team still needs you.

Johnson announced his retirement on October 6, bringing an end to a 14-season career with the Philadelphia Eagles. The veteran offensive lineman admitted that walking away was difficult, especially because he had hoped to play one more season alongside his teammates.“I deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year; to take the field with my brothers for one last season,” Johnson wrote in his retirement statement. However, he explained that his priorities had changed and that continuing to play was no longer the right choice for him.

“Right now it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percent in the game,” Johnson said.

“And right now my heart is telling me that it’s time to say goodbye to football.”Johnson’s words made it clear that he did not want to continue playing unless he could give the game his full attention. He also wanted to put his family and personal well-being first rather than extend his career for another season.Clark praised that choice, noting that Johnson had previously spoken about protecting his mental health and was now following the same principle in his own life. His message was that stepping away does not make someone weak, even when that person is a physically strong and successful athlete.
