Protests against the alleged police indifference in handling the Nedumbassery accident case that claimed three lives continued unabated, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organising a march to the Nedumbassery police station on Wednesday (October 14, 2026).
The protest march, organised by the CPI(M) Aluva area committee, was inaugurated by district secretary S. Satish. Police stopped the march before it reached the station by erecting barricades on the road. Slogan-shouting protesters attempted to breach the barriers. A similar march to the police station had been organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Tuesday.
The CPI(M) accused the police of attempting to weaken the case to protect Suhail, who it alleged belonged to an influential and wealthy family. Reiterating the party’s criticism, Mr. Satish alleged that the police had delayed registering the FIR and had omitted both the accused’s name and his alleged heavy drunk state from it. He further questioned why the FIR did not mention eyewitness accounts claiming that equipment suspected to be used for consuming narcotic substances was found in the car involved in the crash.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised over the decision to remand the key accused, Suhail Sajeev, 19, to a Borstal School despite him not being a juvenile. The police defended the move, citing Section 324 of the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Rules and noting that it was in accordance with an order issued by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Angamaly. In its remand report, the police stated that investigations were also examining whether the accused was under the influence of narcotic substances and whether the speeding car had been involved in illegal racing.
The accident occurred on October 11 around 1.45 a.m.. Besides Suhail, the police have arrested three of his friends and co-passengers, Ninav, 19, Ameen Sha, 20, and Joel S. Anto, 20. The police have also moved an application seeking Suhail’s custody for further investigation.
