Qualcomm announced global job cuts, framing the layoffs as a “performance-focused reduction,” the Reuters reported. According to CEO Cristiano Amon, the decision stems from the company’s evolving needs as it expands into new domains.
While internal messaging presents these cuts as a routine alignment of talent and role competencies, the underlying drivers are rooted in severe macroeconomic headwinds, an over-reliance on a declining smartphone market, delayed returns on diversification, key customer account vulnerabilities, and board impatience during a multi-year corporate transformation.
However, we still do not know how many jobs will be axed in the coming months, and which regions will be most impacted by the layoffs.
What are the economic pressures?
The primary external trigger for Qualcomm’s restructuring is the sharp downturn in global smartphone sales. According to Counterpoint Research, global smartphone shipments dropped 20% year-over-year (YoY) in Q3 2026, marking the lowest market levels since 2012.
This drop was heavily fuelled by soaring memory chip prices, which inflated the bill of materials (BOM) costs for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and exacerbated supply shortages.
In response, OEMs passed on these cost increases to consumers, driving global smartphone retail prices up by 20% so far in 2026 and lifting average selling prices (ASPs).
However, higher price tags have failed to offset volume declines. In key growth markets such as India, market research firm Techarc projects 2026 to close down 26–28% by volume and 7–8% by value compared to 2025.
When a major volume driver like India experiences such severe contraction, the entire semiconductor value chain, and especially component suppliers like Qualcomm, feels the impact.
Is Qualcomm’s portfolio diverse enough?
Smartphones remain Qualcomm’s single largest revenue driver, accounting for 51% of total revenue, according to its latest financial reporting. Because more than half of its top line is tied to a single product category, Qualcomm remains acutely vulnerable to contractions in consumer mobile demand.
While Qualcomm has actively pursued diversification, non-smartphone categories have been slow to yield significant financial scale. In the automotive sector, Qualcomm has gained solid traction, but building a material revenue contribution takes time. At best, automotive is projected to settle at 25–30% of Qualcomm’s total revenue within the next 3 to 5 years.
The efforts to expand into PC chips and laptops have been slow to gain mass-market momentum.
Emerging categories like smart eyewear present significant long-term promise, but achieving scale requires strong penetration into mass consumer price tiers (such as the ₹10,000–15,000 range in India), rather than remaining confined to niche premium offerings like Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta.
What are the market challenges?
In addition to market contraction, Qualcomm faces pressure across both premium and mass-market smartphone tiers. While Qualcomm continues to maintain a strong presence in premium flagship devices, MediaTek has taken the overall leadership position across the wider volume market.
Qualcomm’s high-margin modem contract with Apple is entering its final months, creating an impending revenue gap that must be filled.
Furthermore, there were recent media reports about Samsung raising thermal concerns over a planned 2nm chip for its upcoming flagship. Although Qualcomm dismissed these reports as normal pre-launch testing and fine-tuning, such friction highlights the intense technical and commercial scrutiny surrounding flagship chip platforms.
What is happening inside Qualcomm?
Qualcomm has been undergoing an organisational transition for the past 3 to 4 years to pivot beyond mobile into broader compute and connected devices. However, large-scale transformations often face internal tension when financial returns do not immediately meet board expectations.
“It may be true that the board does not see the performance of some up to the expected benchmarks. But 3-4 years is too little time for any such large-scale transformation to bear fruit. It’s not just Qualcomm; many boards approve transformations, then grow impatient and don’t give them enough time to deliver results,” said Faisal Kawoosa, the founder of Techarc.
Success in the smartphone market cannot simply be retrofitted into new categories; establishing credentials in unfamiliar sectors requires sustained investment and time.
