After seven days of challenging terrain, aching muscles and unpredictable weather, the intrepid hikers from the Rotary Club of Silves have completed their 110km charity challenge, reaching the lighthouse at Cape St Vincent.
The final seven kilometres felt almost like a gentle stroll compared with the demanding conditions of the previous six days.
Their journey took them through the mountains of Monchique, where they tackled steep paths and crossed streams, before continuing along the rugged coastline of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Along the way, the hikers encountered rocky cliffs, hidden coves, sweeping sand dunes and windswept landscapes, enduring scorching sunshine, dust storms and particularly strong winds.
With 110 kilometres behind them, the team can finally enjoy some well-earned rest, giving their sore feet, aching muscles and sunburn time to recover.
But was all the effort worthwhile? “Definitely worth it!” says Rotary Club of Silves president Judy Falcao.
“We may only be halfway to our €6,000 target as we go to press, but thanks to the generosity of those who have already donated, once we reach €4,000, we can begin providing treatment for children in the Silves area who have been identified as needing support with language and behavioural difficulties.
“If we reach our €6,000 goal, we will be able to help even more children.”
The club hopes the hikers’ determination will inspire further donations, turning their physical achievement into practical support for local families.
Donations are still welcome, with every contribution helping the club move closer to its fundraising target.
