Taiz – Government forces repelled a Houthi attack on the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz on Tuesday, according to Yemeni sources.
The sources confirmed that the Houthis shelled the western outskirts of Taiz, resulting in civilian casualties.
They explained that the Houthi attack began from the east, north, and west, accompanied by heavy weapons fire and shelling that landed in residential neighborhoods, damaging homes.
Since the beginning of October, the Houthis have been besieging the strategic city of Taiz, closing the roads connecting it to Aden in southern Yemen.
On Tuesday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for the opening of a humanitarian corridor to deliver aid to Taiz.
In a statement, Türk warned that "the Houthis' closure of the only supply route linking Taiz to Aden exposes civilians to grave risks, prevents the delivery of humanitarian aid, and hinders access to basic necessities."
He added, "Humanitarian aid must be allowed immediate access to the city and its passage facilitated."
UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh also stated that Taiz governorate is a "source of grave concern" as it is "the primary source of displacement."
According to the UN official, 76 percent of displacement cases originate from Taiz, while the city is hosting 52 percent of newly displaced people.
The UNHCR announced on Tuesday that more than 250,000 people have been displaced within Yemen since August, following the resumption of hostilities between government forces and the Houthis.
