South Sudan has formally applied for full membership in the Maritime Organisation of Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA) and asked Tanzania to allocate land for an inland container depot to improve access to international markets.
The requests were presented Thursday by Transport Ministry Undersecretary Paul Dhel Gum during the 10th Assembly of MOESNA Ministers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, according to the Ministry of Transport.
Gum said MOESNA membership would strengthen regional trade links, diversify transport corridors and reduce logistical barriers facing South Sudan as a landlocked country.
He also called on member states to support South Sudan through technical cooperation, professional training and institutional capacity-building in maritime transport and logistics.
Separately, Gum appealed to Tanzania to allocate suitable land for a South Sudanese inland container depot and related logistics facilities linked to the Port of Dar es Salaam.
He said the proposed facility would improve cargo handling, customs coordination and the movement of goods destined for South Sudan, describing the initiative as a strategic partnership that could expand trade and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
South Sudan depends on transport corridors through neighbouring countries to reach seaports and international markets. Diversifying these routes could improve supply-chain resilience and facilitate trade.
However, South Sudan’s full MOESNA membership and the proposed inland container depot remain subject to the relevant approvals and arrangements.
