Which Economies Are Growing the Fastest in 2026?
Key Takeaways:
- Guyana leads the world with projected real GDP growth of 22.3% in 2026, more than double Taiwan’s 10.7%.
- Eight African economies rank among the 18 fastest-growing, led by South Sudan (10.5%) and Ethiopia (9.2%).
- Asia accounts for nine economies on the list, including Vietnam (8.4%) and India (7.0%).
The world’s fastest-growing economies in 2026 are concentrated in Africa and Asia, but the country leading the rankings is in South America.
This visualization, created by Aneesh Anand, ranks 18 economies by projected real GDP growth using the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) October 2026 World Economic Outlook.
Ranking the Economies Growing the Most in 2026
The following table shows projected annual real GDP growth rates, according to the IMF’s World Economic Outlook.
| Economy | Real GDP (%) |
|---|---|
 Guyana | 22.3 |
 Taiwan | 10.7 |
 South Sudan | 10.5 |
 Ethiopia | 9.2 |
 Kyrgyzstan | 9.0 |
 Vietnam | 8.4 |
 Uzbekistan | 7.8 |
 Rwanda | 7.4 |
 Tajikistan | 7.3 |
 Georgia | 7.2 |
 Guinea | 7.2 |
 Benin | 7.0 |
 Bhutan | 7.0 |
 India | 7.0 |
 Niger | 7.0 |
 Sudan | 7.0 |
 Mongolia | 6.2 |
 Uganda | 6.2 |
Guyana’s projected growth rate puts it well ahead of the rest of the ranking. Taiwan takes second place, followed by South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kyrgyzstan.
Notably, India is the only economy among the world’s five largest by GDP to appear on the list, with projected growth of 7.0%.
Why Is Guyana Growing So Quickly?
Guyana’s extraordinary growth is largely driven by its rapidly expanding oil industry, following the start of offshore production in 2019. According to Our World in Data, Guyana’s oil production increased 860% between 2020 and 2025, helping push GDP per capita to more than three times the global average.
However, translating oil wealth into lasting prosperity remains a challenge. Managing oil revenues, investing in infrastructure, and reducing exposure to volatile commodity prices will be important for sustaining long-term growth.
Africa and Asia Dominate the Rankings
Africa accounts for eight economies on the list, reflecting a range of growth drivers. Ethiopia and Rwanda benefit from infrastructure investment and expanding services, while resource production and recovery from economic disruption influence growth prospects in countries such as Guinea and South Sudan.
Across sub-Saharan Africa, youthful populations and urbanization offer longer-term opportunities, although political instability and financing constraints remain significant risks.
Meanwhile, Asia contributes nine economies, led by Taiwan, Kyrgyzstan, and Vietnam. Manufacturing, exports, investment, and domestic consumption support growth across the region.
These rankings also highlight an important distinction: fast GDP growth is not the same as having a large economy. Smaller economies can record exceptional percentage gains from new industries or recovery from previous contractions, while larger economies generally grow from a much higher economic base.
Looking ahead, growth rankings may shift as commodity production, investment cycles, and global trade conditions evolve. These figures are projections, and rapid economic expansion does not necessarily translate into equally rapid improvements in living standards.
