Chamath Palihapitiya once predicted bitcoin would reach $1 million. Now he says artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually hack the Bitcoin protocol and ultimately send BTC’s value to zero. But the billionaire’s reversal follows a familiar pattern. From selling Tesla shares while publicly praising the company to acknowledging serious flaws in his SPAC empire, Palihapitiya has repeatedly reconsidered investments he once championed. His latest bitcoin price warning adds another chapter to that history.
Key Takeaways
- Chamath Palihapitiya predicts an AI attack will eventually send bitcoin’s value to zero.
- Chamath called earlier bitcoin sales a multibillion-dollar mistake in November 2024.
- Palihapitiya’s BTC reversal follows changes in his public positions on Tesla and SPACs.
From $1 Million to Zero, Chamath Reverses Course on Bitcoin Again
Chamath Palihapitiya once called bitcoin “gold 2.0,” predicted a $1 million price, and urged investors to treat it as financial insurance. Now the billionaire investor says bitcoin is capped and eventually headed for zero, courtesy of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered hack. It’s quite a reversal, though hardly his first.
The former Facebook executive has previously sold Tesla while publicly praising the company and later acknowledged fundamental problems with the special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) he helped popularize. His latest bitcoin forecast adds another twist to a career marked by bold predictions, lucrative exits and occasional second thoughts.
Chamath Predicts Bitcoin’s Demise at the Hands of AI
Speaking on Episode 304 of Peter Diamandis’ Moonshots podcast, released earlier this week, Palihapitiya threw cold water on bitcoin’s long-term prospects. “I just think it’s capped, and then I think eventually it gets hacked, and then it goes to zero.” His reasoning centers on three concerns: limited fungibility, inadequate financial privacy, and the possibility that increasingly sophisticated AI systems could compromise Bitcoin’s network security.
Palihapitiya argued that central banks cannot readily adopt bitcoin as a reserve asset because its transparent ledger lacks the privacy protections sovereign institutions require. Without those potential buyers, he believes the cryptocurrency faces a valuation ceiling. His darker scenario involves an AI system cracking Bitcoin’s cryptographic defenses or compromising Satoshi Nakamoto‘s dormant holdings. An attacker, he suggested, could steal the coins, short bitcoin and announce the breach, potentially profiting twice from the resulting market panic.
He also characterized a coordinated transition to quantum-resistant cryptography as “basically impossible,” citing Bitcoin’s notoriously contentious governance. These remain hypothetical threats, not demonstrated vulnerabilities. SHA-256 hashing and wallet-signature security are distinct cryptographic mechanisms, and no such catastrophic Bitcoin protocol breach has occurred.
From Bitcoin Evangelist to Billion-Dollar Regrets
The prediction represents a dramatic departure from Palihapitiya’s early advocacy and bitcoiners are letting him know. Beginning around 2012 and 2013, he accumulated bitcoin near $80 to $100 per coin. He famously recommended allocating 1% of personal wealth to the cryptocurrency as “schmuck insurance.” By 2017, he envisioned $100,000 bitcoin and eventually $1 million. In January 2021, he predicted prices reaching $200,000 over five to 10 years.
Yet Palihapitiya had already disposed of substantial holdings. In 2014, he reportedly used approximately 2,739 BTC, then worth $1.6 million, for a Lake Tahoe land purchase. During a November 2024 All-In podcast discussion, he described earlier bitcoin sales as a “$3 or $4 billion mistake… growing now.” Now he says he no longer holds bitcoin directly, having exchanged his long-term exposure for equity in Digital Currency Group (DCG), partly to escape personal custody risks.
Tesla, SPACs and a History of Reversals
Bitcoin isn’t the first investment to receive dramatically different assessments from Palihapitiya. In January 2021, he publicly praised Tesla’s prospects, suggesting its shares could double or triple. By September, however, he disclosed that he had sold his entire position during the preceding year, despite remaining publicly optimistic about the automaker.
Then came the SPAC boom. Nicknamed the “SPAC King,” Palihapitiya championed blank-check companies as a better route to public markets. Deals involving Virgin Galactic, Clover Health, and Opendoor subsequently experienced steep share-price declines, while SoFi proved a comparatively stronger performer. He also sold approximately $213 million in personal Virgin Galactic shares in early 2021.
Palihapitiya later conceded that SPAC incentives were “totally and fundamentally misaligned because I could do a deal and still get paid.” He called the experience “a blemish on my track record, and I’m gonna fix it.”
Changing His Mind or Changing the Narrative?
Palihapitiya has openly defended intellectual flexibility, declaring that he “reserves the right to change my mind.” His investment history illustrates that philosophy, although selling an investment while remaining optimistic about its prospects is not necessarily contradictory. Liquidity needs, portfolio management and changing market conditions can all influence those decisions.
Still, the contrast is difficult to miss. The investor who once promoted bitcoin as protection against financial instability now predicts its technological destruction, while acknowledging that he exchanged his own coins for corporate equity years earlier.
Whether his latest prediction proves prescient or becomes another forecast he eventually revisits, Palihapitiya has traveled a considerable distance from recommending bitcoin as insurance to warning that the insurance itself might disappear.
