Rangers have spent heavily to reshape their squad under Derek McInnes, bringing in 14 players during the summer window as the club look to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title. That rebuilding work has produced encouraging results, although a recent 2-2 draw against Dundee interrupted a seven-game winning run across all competitions and left the Ibrox side four points behind their Glasgow rivals, which is now one after the win against St. Johnstone before Celtic take on Hibernian tomorrow.
McInnes needs consistency from his attacking players as Rangers attempt to close that gap. Djeidi Gassama offers pace on the left, while Badredine Bouanani provides another creative option after joining on loan. Ross McCausland and Daisuke Yokota give the manager further choices, but one summer arrival has quickly become an important part of the team’s plans.
According to Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Rangers expect clubs to show formal interest in Minsu Kim before the January transfer window. Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke indicated that the Scottish club have no desire to lose the winger so soon after his arrival, although substantial offers from leading European leagues could complicate their position.
Rangers signed Kim from Girona for a reported £8.5 million fee, and the club remain pleased with his early performances under McInnes. Despite failing to register a goal or assist in his opening Scottish Premiership appearances, Kim has earned regular opportunities through his dribbling, movement and work without the ball.
His previous loan spell with FC Andorra produced 10 goals and assists across 40 appearances, offering evidence of his attacking potential. Rangers will hope that end product follows as he adapts to Scottish football.
Should Rangers reject major January offers despite Kim’s slow start?

Kim’s league figures explain why his performances deserve closer attention. By 24 October, he had made seven Premiership appearances, starting five and playing 411 minutes. He had attempted 19 shots, recorded 1.88 expected goals, completed 13 successful dribbles and created nine key chances. His 83.9% passing accuracy and 19 defensive recoveries further demonstrate his contribution beyond scoring.
Those numbers suggest Rangers would sacrifice an important attacking outlet if they allowed Kim to leave midway through his first season. His ability to beat full-backs and attack space gives McInnes a different option, particularly when opponents crowd the central areas and restrict Ryan Naderi’s opportunities.
Financially, Rangers must protect the value of an £8.5 million investment rather than entertain a quick sale simply because another club offers a substantial fee. Kim’s contract reportedly runs until 2030, with a further one-year option, giving the hierarchy room to demand an attractive price if interest develops.
The recruitment department’s reported scouting of Doncaster Rovers youngster Bayley McCann suggests Rangers continue to examine younger options for future squad development. The Northern Ireland Under-21 international has recorded two assists in seven League One appearances, although there is no indication that he represents a direct replacement for Kim.
Rangers should resist January approaches unless the circumstances change dramatically. Kim’s lack of goal contributions deserves attention, but his underlying numbers show that he already creates chances and contributes to McInnes’ pressing game.
Selling him now would weaken a squad still chasing Celtic, while retaining him gives the coaching staff time to develop his finishing and decision-making. For a club seeking sustained domestic success, his next step should come on the pitch at Ibrox, rather than at another club.
