The Diplomat is back, but don’t expect Keri Russell to method dress the part of an ambassador. In the lead-up to the show’s fourth season, the actor is subverting suiting in a way that no bureaucrat ever could.
Take the look that Russell, styled by Frank Fleming, wore to SAG-AFTRA Foundation for a Diplomat screening today: a black Phoebe Philo knit crewneck sweater, sleeves artfully pushed up above the elbow; gray mélange shorts from Junya Watanabe’s Comme des Garçons with streams of black lining emerging from beneath the hem; and gathered brown Saint Laurent slingbacks, their toes sharpened to a knife point. She finished the look with a pair of classic Wayfarers and a monogrammed Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandoulière.

While the sharp tailoring is the center of Russell and her character Kate Wyler’s Venn diagram, Russell takes a loucher approach than her fictional ambassador alter-ego. Yesterday, she celebrated The Diplomat’s Paris Theater premiere in a NSFW suit from Givenchy by Sarah Burton. The actor opted for an open blazer with its sharp lapels turned inward, worn over a black ruched bandeau top. As for her trousers, she wore a high-waisted pair that showed off just a sliver of her abs.

While Keri Russell isn’t the ambassador she plays on television, these impeccably tailored looks definitely mean business.
