Should SF Giants Consider This Braves Pitcher Reunion After Dismal Season?

There are tire fires. There are dumpster fires. There are apocalyptic blow outs where terminators take over the planet and we become of wasteland of nanobot technology. Then there is the San Francisco Giants 2026 season.

In that order.

So you can bet president of baseball operations Buster Posey is scrambling around to find a way to improve the team if there is a 2027 season come next year. Giants finished 65-97 and missed the postseason for the fifth time in a row. Sure, fans can point as many fingers as they want: blame Posey, blame the 19 car pile-up that was manager Tony Vitello’s first season, blame injuries, lineups, and their pitching issues. Fact of the matter is, major changes need to happen.

One of those mentioned, pitching, could be key, starting with adding solid pitchers around Logan Webb and Landen Roupp, which could mean reuniting the Giants with pitcher Tyler Mahle, who was traded to the Atlanta Braves during the season and had himself a nice postseason run.

Roundtable Sports makes a compelling argument for Mahle, which proves pressure works for the 32-year-old right-hander:

“Mahle had posted a 5.13 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 94.2 innings over 18 starts for the Giants, leaving little reason to view him as a potential difference maker.

“Instead, Mahle became a stabilizing presence in the Braves’ rotation. He posted a stellar 1.99 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 54.1 innings over nine regular season starts.”

And it continued in the postseason.

“His success continued into the postseason, when he posted a 1.35 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 13.1 innings of two starts. Those were Mahle’s first postseason appearances, and he demonstrated that the heightened pressure did not overwhelm him.”

Giants pitching recorded 1,204 strikeouts, issued 596 walks and produced a 2.02 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which was considerably worse than their 2025 campaign where they had 1,358 strikeouts and 506 walks.
