For flickering moments Friday night, there was a blueprint of what Maryland volleyball is trying to build. The audience could see it in the fearless, high contact swings of Brooklynne Brass, in the towering block touches of Ava Brown and in the gritty, point-for-point battle that brought a glimmer of hope in Terps fans’ eyes.
Potentially, against an ordinary Big Ten opponent, that spark might have grown into a blaze. Instead, it was extinguished by No. 6 Wisconsin’s overwhelming precision.
Eleven total blocks and .344 hitting efficiency told the story in Madison, Wisconsin, where the Badgers dismantled Maryland in a 3-0 sweep.
The loss highlighted both the promise and the growing pains of Maryland’s freshmen attackers. Brass and Brown showed tactical resilience against Big Ten blocking depth, but 12 team service errors and a .155 hitting percentage prevented the Terps from capitalizing on key transition opportunities.
Maryland head coach Adam Hughes called an early timeout with his team trailing 8-2, searching for an offensive spark. Outside hitters Brass and Brown showed tactical flexibility along the net, but the Terps continued to struggle with first-ball side-out conversion.
The deficit further deepened when a Badgers challenge at 13-10 was overturned in their favor, pushing the score to 14-9. Brass answered out of the break with a clutch kill to stop the run, but Maryland couldn’t sustain the offensive momentum. The Terps hit .100 compared to Wisconsin’s overwhelming .444 percentage in the opening set, allowing Badgers to open an 18-11 cushion.
Lynney Tarnow had a kill that stretched Wisconsin’s lead to 19-12. However, a string of service errors — first from Toth at 21-15, then from Wisconsin at 23-18, and finally from Maryland at 24-18 — impeded any continuous rhythm late in the frame. The Badgers closed out the first set on the next play, terminating a final kill at set point to win, 25-18.
Maryland responded in set two by jumping out to its first lead at 5-3, prompting an early Wisconsin timeout. Coming off a career-high 19-kill performance, Brass helped stabilize the attack and elevated Maryland’s efficiency to .250 on 13 kills, gaining on Wisconsin’s .379 hitting percentage.
Unlike the opening frame, set two was a grueling point-for-point battle. The teams traded scores through a 7-7 tie, locked up again at 13-13, and navigated all the way to a 19-19 deadlock, where Maryland burned a challenge on a touch call to hold its ground. Neither squad produced a service ace, and both felt the burden of end-line misfires, with Maryland giving away five service errors to Wisconsin’s six.
Ultimately, the net defense separated the two sides. While neither team erred in ball handling, Wisconsin established a decisive 4-0 blocking advantage. That defensive effort keyed a late five-point Badger run right out of the 19-19 tie, allowing Wisconsin to pull away with a tight, 25-22, win.
In the third set, the Badgers sparked to an 8-6 lead after battling to a tie at four earlier. Wisconsin continued to pull away midway through the set, using a quick 3-0 run to extend the lead to 17-10 and forcing Hughes to call a timeout. The Badgers put the set completely out of reach with a late four-point run to earn match point at 24-14, and the night ended fittingly on a Maryland service error to hand Wisconsin the 25-14 win.
Across the entire match, Wisconsin’s efficiency and net presence proved overwhelming. The Badgers hit .344 overall with 42 kills while holding Maryland to a .155 clip on 35 kills. Wisconsin’s front row anchored the sweep with an 11-5 advantage in total blocks, continually obstructing Maryland’s transition attempts and shutting down any hope of a late-match rally.
Three things to know
1. Freshman power. Freshmen attackers Brass and Brown provided the majority of Maryland’s offensive fight throughout the night. Brass, coming off a career-high 19 kills in Maryland’s win over Northwestern, stabilized the Terrapins’ set two attack by elevating Maryland hitting efficiency, while Brown’s versatility along the net kept the Terps within striking distance during early battles.
2. Wisconsin’s wall at the net. The primary deciding factor in all three sets was Wisconsin’s overwhelming net defense. The Badgers out-blocked Maryland 11 to 5 for the match, including a game-altering 4-0 run in set two that broke opena 19-19 deadlock to turn the tide for good.
3. Transition defense meltdown. While Maryland managed 35 digs on the night, its ability to convert those defensive touches into points was heavily suppressed by Wisconsin’s transition defense.
