Hulcoop turns personal accessibility challenges into practical solutions, helping others overcome barriers and creating a more inclusive world through his work.
For 16 months, Brandon Hulcoop faced rejection after rejection while trying to find work. Blind since birth, the 23-year-old had applied for more than 1,000 jobs without securing a position.
Instead of allowing that experience to define his prospects, he turned his frustration into a business aimed at making everyday experiences more accessible for people with sight loss. Scroll down to read his story of struggle, inclusion and independence.
From job rejections to entrepreneurship
According to an AOL report, Hulcoop's turning point came after he received support from The King’s Trust through its Enterprise programme. The experience helped him develop the confidence and practical skills to pursue an idea of his own, eventually leading to the creation of All Things Dotty. The business focuses on accessible products for visually impaired people, their families and organisations, explains the online report. Its range includes Braille menus, greetings cards, board games, card games, colouring books and artwork, bringing accessibility into areas of everyday life that can often be overlooked.
Making accessibility more practical
As per a report by Daily Mail, Hulcoop has taken his work beyond selling accessible products.
He also established the UK Sight Loss Collective, which works as a liaison between government and public bodies on issues affecting people with sight loss. His efforts extend into education and community support as well. He offers free Braille tuition to people on low incomes, mentors young people as they enter the workforce and speaks at schools about his experiences.
He also serves as an ambassador for sight loss charity Devon in Sight. The combination of entrepreneurship and advocacy has made his work particularly personal. Rather than simply identifying gaps in accessibility, Hulcoop has built practical solutions while helping others navigate some of the barriers he encountered himself.
A major recognition
According to the AOL report, his determination has now earned Hulcoop The King’s Trust Young Achiever Award at the Pride of Britain Awards. The honour recognises young people who have overcome significant challenges with support from The King’s Trust and gone on to make a difference in the lives of others. The report also mentions that Hulcoop met King Charles at a King’s Trust event in London earlier this month, shortly after learning that he had won the award.
