The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two cases against former Lakshmipur-2 lawmaker Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan over allegations of accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income. His wife, Chowdhury Rubina Yasmin Lubna, has also been named as an accused in one of the cases.
ACC Integrated District Office, Chandpur, Deputy Assistant Director Kamrul Islam filed the cases today (18 October).
Kamrul confirmed the matter, saying a three-member inquiry team was formed on 4 November 2024 to investigate allegations of illegal wealth accumulation against Nayan and his wife.
The inquiry found information suggesting that the two had accumulated wealth beyond their known sources of income through abuse of power, prompting the commission to file the cases, he said.
Nayan, a former MP for Lakshmipur-2, which comprises Raipur and part of Sadar, is also general secretary of the Lakshmipur district unit of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned. He and his wife have been absconding since 5 August 2024.
According to ACC sources, investigators found immovable assets worth Tk33.14 lakh and movable assets worth Tk1.25 crore in Nayan's name, bringing the total value of his assets to Tk1.58 crore.
The inquiry also identified Tk1.16 crore in family and other expenses. His assets and expenditure together amounted to Tk2.74 crore.
Against this, the ACC found Tk1.94 crore in acceptable income from various sources, including liabilities and loans.
The commission calculated that Nayan had accumulated Tk79.99 lakh in assets inconsistent with his known sources of income.
The ACC alleged that he acquired and possessed the assets through abuse of power and various irregularities and corrupt practices while serving as an MP. He has been accused of offences punishable under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
In the other case, investigators found immovable assets worth Tk1.38 crore and movable assets worth Tk24.66 lakh in Lubna's name, bringing the total value of her assets to Tk1.62 crore.
The inquiry also identified Tk20.04 lakh in family and other expenses, taking the combined value of her assets and expenditure to Tk1.83 crore.
According to the ACC, investigators found no acceptable source of income in Lubna's name to justify the acquisition of these assets.
The commission alleged that the assets were acquired with money generated by Nayan through irregularities and corruption. Lubna was also accused of acquiring and possessing the assets on behalf of her husband.
She was named the principal accused in the case concerning her assets, while Nayan was named the second accused.
