Trump attacks Democratic challenger Hamilton at Kansas rally as Senate race tightens

President Donald Trump took the stage in ruby-red Kansas on Monday night to campaign for Sen. Roger Marshall, a one-term incumbent facing a surprisingly close race against Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton.

Trump unleashed a series of personal and baseless attacks against Hamilton at the rally in Park City, Kansas -- about 10 miles north of Wichita -- with just two weeks out from election day as the balance of power in the Senate hangs in the balance. And he also returned to anti-Muslim and anti-immigration rhetoric as he has in recent events to attack other candidates.

The contest has drawn attention because a Democratic victory could end Kansas’ 94-year streak of electing Republican senators.

Trump portrayed Hamilton, a popular pastor and the founder of the largest United Methodist congregation in the United States, as a "bad person" and a "disgrace" who is “pretending to be a moderate.”

During the rally, President Trump was interrupted by five protesters during four incidents and, after one of the interruptions, he remarked on the “great law enforcement” who swiftly escorted the interrupters out of the rally.

Trump’s remarks about the Kansas law enforcement came as news broke not long before that a local man will be facing a federal charge for allegedly threatening to shoot the president ahead of his Wichita rally.

Trump also again repeatedly used anti-immigration rhetoric during the rally, directing criticism at Muslim figures including Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. He urged the crowd to vote for Republicans to preserve the United States' “heritage.”

“Americans are going to stand up and declare that we will defend our culture, we will protect our civilization, we will preserve our religion, our values, and our heritage, and we will never let our nation be conquered or destroyed by people that hate us,” Trump said.

As he has in the past, Trump referred to El-Sayed as “Mohammed,” saying, “I can call him whatever the hell I want.”

"I think we all well know why they're doing it. My name is Abdul. I'm Muslim," El-Sayed told ABC's Linsey Davis, addressing why he's a frequent target of Trump and Republicans. "My name and my faith are not the reason people can't afford their gas, not the reason people can't afford their groceries, not the reason people can't see a doctor. And so they're going to try to distract, because that's all they have."

Trump also criticized Omar and referenced Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who is also Muslim.

Trump argued that Marshall would fight against what he called “hostile third-world migrants,” “jihadists” and “communists,” among other groups.

“Democrats are the party of anti-Western Marxist and hostile third-world migrants. And Senator Roger Marshall and the great people of Kansas will not let them plunder our nation's wealth or demolish what our ancestors built with their own sweat, blood, tears, and skill,” Trump said.

Trump defended Marshall against some of Hamilton’s attacks on the Republican, attempting to “set the record straight” for Marshall in light of a recent New York Times report that as an OB/GYN, Marshall filed lawsuits against more than 700 patients who hadn't paid their medical bills.

The outlet also reported that Marshall's lawyers sought arrest warrants for at least 81 patients who missed their court dates. Marshall has denied this report.

“[Marshall is] one of the, he's a tough guy and all, but he's also high quality, and he's a fine person, and he was given a bum rap because he was mandated by law to request strongly money owed from patients,” Trump said.

Trump claimed Marshall did not break this “criminal” law which makes you “go after” patients, and used an antisemitic slur to defend the candidate.

“You got screwed with that stuff,” Trump said, motioning to Marshall. “So I just want to set the record straight. That should not happen to a good person."

In 15 days, we're going to re-elect Roger Marshall, one of the greatest… and we're going to defeat the communists, the jihadists, and the corrupt anti-American lunatics once and for all. We're going to put them back. We got to set them back. Got to hit them hard,” Trump said.

Trump also predicted Republicans would maintain control of Congress in the midterms, dismissing national polls by pointing to his 2016 presidential victory, when polls had projected he would lose.

“You know, when I won in 2016, they were saying, "Oh, he doesn't have a chance. ... They said Hillary is going to win. The Democrats are going to win because you know why? Those are crooked people. But the pollsters are worse,” Trump said. “Well, it turned out I was right.”

Hamilton's campaign said that Marshall and Trump were distracting from the real issues.

"Roger Marshall’s campaign is sinking, and Washington is panicking. They’re sending in reinforcements to lie and attack Adam Hamilton to try to save Marshall," Tyson Brody, a campaign spokesperson for Hamilton, said in a statement obtained by ABC News Tuesday. "But nothing said at the rally can distract from the fact Kansans are being crushed by rising gas and diesel prices, struggling to access affordable healthcare, and are tired of Washington corruption. Kansans are looking for a senator who will be a champion for us, not Washington."
