Kaylub Giamanco, the Oregon father praised for confronting and fatally shooting a gunman inside his daughters’ elementary school, has spoken publicly about the attack for the first time, describing the moment he decided to enter the building and the anguish he continues to carry over the lives he could not save.
"I relive, I see faces, I hear voices, I hear screams," he said in an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, said he was driving past the school when he spotted a man in black carrying a long gun. After initially wondering whether it was a prank, Giamanco said he realized the danger when the armed man threw the weapon over the school fence and climbed after it.
Giamanco retrieved a .40-caliber handgun from his truck, called 911 and followed the gunman into the school. He recalled hearing gunfire and children pleading for their lives as he crawled through a broken window and made his way toward a special education classroom.
There, Giamanco said he encountered a teacher struggling with the shooter. He opened the door and fired, ultimately killing the gunman.
The attack left three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher dead. A 7-year-old girl and another teacher were wounded.
Despite being hailed as a hero by Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek and others, Giamanco said he remains deeply troubled by those he was unable to save.
“I didn't save everybody. I didn't get them all,” he said.
