BATU PAHAT: A grandfather, grandmother and their two grandchildren, including a one-year-old baby, have been identified as the four victims killed in a crash near Yong Peng yesterday.
They were identified as Ab Shukor Athan, 68, his wife Mariam Ibrahim, 65, and their grandchildren Nur Umie Zahiyah Jumie, five, and Muhammad Zaharil Hakimie Jumie, one.
All four suffered severe head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by an assistant medical officer from the Yong Peng Health Clinic.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the children's parents, Jumie Julong, 35, and Nor Hakimah Zakiah Ab Shukor, 32, sustained head injuries and were receiving treatment in the yellow zone of the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI).
He said Jumie's two other children, Muhammad Zariff Hakimie, two, and Muhammad Zafrul Hakimie, three, who were also in the Ford Ranger, suffered serious injuries and were being treated at the same hospital.
"Other injured victims were the driver and passenger of a Toyota Vios, Chin Nyet Boon, 46, and Yong Ah Moi, 81. The lorry driver, Mohd Nadzri Abd Wahab, 31, escaped unhurt," he said when contacted.
Shahrulanuar said preliminary investigations found that the Ford Ranger was travelling south when its driver suddenly lost control and crashed into the rear right side of the lorry, which had stopped on the emergency lane due to engine trouble.
The collision occurred at 5.50pm and involved three vehicles: the Ford Ranger, a Toyota Vios and the lorry.
"The impact caused the Ford Ranger to spin before it was hit from behind by the Toyota Vios," he said.
The bodies of the four victims were taken to HSNI for post-mortem examinations. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
