A Catholic priest has died in Guayaquil, Ecuador, after a large wooden cross fell on him during a Mass broadcast live on social media. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the death of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, pastor of the Perpetuo Socorro church, after the accident on Saturday 17 October 2026.
Ecuador is a popular destination for American travellers and expats, and many Ecuadorians live in the United States. The video of the Mass has been widely shared online, so many US readers may already have seen it.
We describe the facts with care and without graphic detail, out of respect for the priest and for those who knew him. Everything below comes from the archdiocese statement and the video as reported by regional media, and we say clearly what is still unknown.

What We Know
Father Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, whose members are known as Redemptorists. He was pastor of the Perpetuo Socorro church, which means Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in the Vicaría Centro of the Archdiocese of Guayaquil.
On Saturday 17 October 2026 he was celebrating a Mass that was broadcast live on social media. A large wooden cross mounted on the wall behind him came loose and fell on him.
The fall occurs around minute 27 of the stream. The recording also captures the shocked reactions of worshippers in the church.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death in a statement signed by Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera. The statement says he “has departed to the Father’s House”.
The archdiocese also expressed its solidarity with the Redemptorist community, with his family and with his friends. That statement is the main official account available so far.
Because the Mass was streamed live, the moment reached viewers far beyond the congregation in the building. The recording has since circulated widely on social media.
Our account draws on the archdiocese statement and the footage as reported by El Tiempo, Semana, ABC Color and Vanguardia. We have not independently obtained the full text of the statement.
What Is Not Known
The reports we reviewed do not give the priest’s age or the exact time of the Mass. Reports differ on where he died: one outlet says at the scene, while others say the archdiocese did not clarify.
The reason the cross came loose from the wall has not been explained. No report we reviewed says whether an investigation or a safety inspection has begun.
Funeral arrangements have not been reported. We will add them once the archdiocese or the Redemptorist community publishes them.
Until more is confirmed, any explanation for the fall would be speculation. We will not offer one, and we will update this article if official details emerge.
What It Means for Travelers and US Readers
The reports describe a single incident and do not mention a wider safety concern for visitors or other churches. We have seen no official travel guidance linked to the event.
Travellers and expats in the Guayaquil area can follow notices from the Archdiocese of Guayaquil and from local parishes. US citizens in Ecuador can also check the website of the US embassy in Quito for general updates.
Ecuadorians living in the United States may look to their own parishes and to family at home for news of memorial services. No such services have been announced in the reports we reviewed.
Our Ecuador page collects the latest reports from the country for visitors and residents. Readers can return there for further confirmed details on this story.
The story is above all a loss for a religious community, a family and a parish. For readers abroad, the clearest point is that the confirmed facts are still few.
