Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi has shifted classes online amid escalating campus tensions over demands to restore student union elections, following a confrontation between protesting students and university staff at a hunger strike site today (24 October).
A notice issued by the university registrar's office said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure students' safety and security and maintain continuity in teaching and learning.
The university urged students across all courses to follow their online class schedules and avoid visiting the campus. The gates and libraries will remain closed until further notice, according to the notice.
The All India Students' Association (AISA) alleged that the university administration began "assaulting students" during negotiations.
"The hunger strikers and the protest site are being attacked. This reveals the most brutal face of the Jamia administration," AISA said in a press release.
The hunger strike by five students entered its 13th day today. They are demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) and the removal of the university's chief proctor, whom they accuse of cracking down on protesters.
Jasim Ali Khan, who has been on hunger strike since the protest began, accused the administration of launching a "crackdown" and called for the restoration of the students' union.
