Nvidia's rumoured RTX 5080 24 GB could become its most powerful GeForce GPU available in 2027

A few days ago, we reported that Nvidia could be winding down production of the GeForce RTX 5090 because Nvidia plans to redirect future GB202 chip allocations towards its more lucrative RTX Pro workstation GPUs. The move would effectively prevent board partners from manufacturing new RTX 5090 cards once their existing inventories are exhausted, making the existing stock even pricier. Now, Taiwanese publication Benchlife has corroborated the earlier information and provided additional details about Nvidia's plans for its consumer GPU lineup.

According to the report, Nvidia intends to launch a new GeForce RTX 5080 with 24 GB of GDDR7 memory in the first quarter of 2027. It will reportedly replace the existing RTX 5080 16 GB. Whether or not Nvidia gives other RTX 50 series SKUs the same VRAM upgrade remains to be seen. Benchlife also claims that Nvidia's add-in card partners have yet to receive development documentation for the upcoming GPU. Instead, they have only been verbally informed that the necessary materials will arrive soon. This suggests the reported Q1 2027 launch window is far from guaranteed, especially in a market where 3 GB GDDR7 modules are precious.

Interestingly, the purported 24 GB RTX 5080 sounds remarkably similar to the long-rumoured RTX 5080 Super. Earlier leaks suggested the refreshed GPU would retain the existing model's 10,752 CUDA cores but increase its memory capacity from 16 GB to 24 GB using higher-density 3 GB GDDR7 modules. This would allow Nvidia to retain the 256-bit memory interface while increasing VRAM capacity by 50%.

However, reports from July 2026 suggested Nvidia had postponed the RTX 50 Super refresh due to the high cost of these memory modules. It remains unclear whether the newly rumoured RTX 5080 24 GB is essentially a rebranded RTX 5080 Super or an entirely different product. Its clock speeds, power consumption and other specifications are also unknown. The chances of Nvidia slapping 3 GB GDDR7 modules on an existing RTX 5080 board and calling it a day are high because that's what it did earlier this year with the RTX 5070 12 GB laptop variant.

Benchlife reiterates that Nvidia has reportedly stopped allocating GB202 chips to board partners for the RTX 5090, RTX 5090 D and RTX 5090 D V2. Instead, future supplies are expected to be reserved for RTX Pro products. If the reports are accurate, the 24 GB RTX 5080 could become Nvidia's highest-end GeForce offering in 2027. While the additional memory alone would not make it a performance successor to the RTX 5090, it will go a long way towards making it a more capable 4K gaming GPU, especially in ray/pathtracing-heavy titles that demand a lot of VRAM.
