KISMAYO, Somalia — The General Officer Commanding Kenya’s Eastern Command, Major General Luka Kutto, has visited Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Kismayo, reaffirming the military’s focus on operational readiness, troop welfare and effective leadership.
16 October, 2026

The visit, announced by Kenya’s Ministry of Defence on October 16, 2026, was part of ongoing engagements by senior KDF commanders with troops deployed in operational areas. The engagements are aimed at assessing operational preparedness, strengthening command relationships and recognizing personnel serving in support of regional peace and security efforts.
Upon arrival in Kismayo, Major General Kutto was received by the Deputy Commander of Sector Two, Colonel Daniel Musau, who welcomed him to the mission area.
During his engagement with deployed personnel, Kutto was briefed on the prevailing operational environment and the challenges facing troops serving in Somalia. The discussions underscored the importance of maintaining high standards of preparedness, discipline and professionalism as personnel carry out their assigned duties.
The visit also highlighted the importance of direct engagement between senior commanders and troops serving away from home. Such interactions provide commanders with an opportunity to better understand operational challenges, reinforce command priorities and strengthen cohesion and morale among deployed units.
Troop welfare remains an important component of operational effectiveness, particularly for military personnel serving in demanding environments far from their families. Maintaining morale, discipline and the well-being of service members is essential to sustaining operational readiness and ensuring troops can effectively carry out their responsibilities.
The visit came shortly after Kenya Defence Forces Day commemorations on October 14, 2026, which honored fallen service members, recognized veterans and celebrated serving personnel. KDF troops deployed in Somalia marked the occasion at Sector Two Headquarters in Kismayo and other operational locations, highlighting the sacrifices associated with military service.
Kismayo hosts AUSSOM’s Sector Two, where Kenyan troops contribute to the African Union-led mission supporting security and stabilization efforts in Somalia.
AUSSOM succeeded the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in January 2025 and operates under a United Nations Security Council mandate. The mission supports Somali security forces in efforts to counter Al-Shabaab and affiliated armed groups, protect civilians, strengthen security institutions and create conditions for long-term stability.
AUSSOM also supports the development of Somali security forces as they gradually assume greater responsibility for the country’s security. The transition requires sustained operational coordination, capacity-building and cooperation among Somali authorities, the African Union and international partners.
Kenya’s participation in the mission forms part of broader regional security efforts, reflecting the cross-border implications of instability in Somalia and the threat posed by extremist violence to communities and security across the Horn of Africa.
Major General Kutto’s visit underscored the importance of maintaining operational readiness while ensuring that personnel deployed in support of regional stability receive continued leadership attention. It also highlighted the role of command presence, discipline and troop welfare in sustaining military effectiveness during overseas deployments.
As AUSSOM continues to implement its mandate, coordination between troop-contributing countries and Somali security institutions remains central to efforts to improve security, protect communities and support the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to Somali forces.
