Key Takeaways :
AOSP is the foundation: Manufacturers customize Android to fit their interfaces, devices, and features.
Updates work differently: Project Mainline and Google Play services deliver some improvements without requiring a full Android upgrade.
Hardware and testing matter: Device capabilities, software compatibility, and rollout schedules determine when features arrive.
A new Android feature can land on a Google Pixel months before a Samsung Galaxy gets it, even though both run Android. It looks odd until you remember what Android actually is. Google builds the core system, and every other brand takes that and layers its own software on top.
Before a company can ship a feature, it has to make it fit that software, make it work with the phone’s hardware, and test it. Some features take almost no effort. Others take months.
AOSP is The Starting Point, Not the Finish Line
Much of Android’s code lives in the Android Open Source Project, or AOSP. When Google adds a feature there, other manufacturers can read through the changes and decide what to do with them.
But having the code doesn’t mean a feature will run on your phone. It might need a recent Android version, a special system permission, or hardware older phones don’t have. Even when it’s technically possible, the interface often needs reworking. Something designed for a Pixel won’t necessarily slot into Samsung’s One UI without changes.
Mainline, Play Services Speed Some Things Ip
Google’s Project Mainline lets certain parts of the system get updated without a full OS upgrade, so supported phones can receive some fixes and improvements through approved channels. Google Play services work in a similar way, adding or improving features on compatible phones without touching the system version.
Neither covers everything. A big feature may still need a newer Android release or work from the manufacturer. That’s why two phones on the same Android version can end up with different tools.

Android 17: Continue On
Android 17 introduces Continue On, which lets supported apps pick up a task on another Android device. You could start something on your phone and finish it on a tablet, for example.
Developers have to add support for it, and both devices need to meet certain requirements. If the app can’t handle the handoff, the second device may open a web page instead. The upside is that developers now have one standard way to do this, instead of each app inventing its own.
Quick Share is Spreading
File sharing between devices has been getting attention too. Quick Share lets compatible Android phones send photos, videos and other files to nearby devices. In August 2026, Google announced tap-to-share for compatible Pixel devices, with plans to bring it to selected Samsung foldables and other Android phones later.
Google has also announced Quick Share support for Apple’s AirDrop on some compatible devices, which could make sending files between Android and Apple phones less of a hassle. Support still depends on the device and its software version, though, and an announcement doesn’t mean every phone gets the feature on day one.
Hardware Gets a Vote
Some features are pure software. A new menu or app tool may run on plenty of phones. A camera feature, on the other hand, might depend on a particular sensor or image processor.
AI features run into the same wall. If a phone doesn’t have enough memory or processing power, an AI model won’t run at a usable speed. Engineers have to test each supported device, and if one can’t cope, the manufacturer may ship a cut-down version or skip the feature there altogether.
Everyone Has Their Own Schedule
Each brand runs its own release calendar and testing process. A new feature could affect battery life, security or existing apps, and the company has to check all of that, plus whether it fits the rest of its software.
Carriers, regional rules and staged rollouts can slow things down further. Some features arrive as app updates, others only with a major Android upgrade. Even two phones from the same brand can get a feature on different dates if their hardware or software differs.

Same Core, Different Phones
Android lets manufacturers build different designs and tools on a shared foundation. AOSP is the base, Mainline updates selected system parts, Play services handles certain features, and developer tools help apps work across devices.
All of that gets more features onto more phones, but it can’t remove every limit. Hardware, custom software and company schedules still count. A feature has really arrived when it works properly on a range of compatible devices, not just on the phone where it debuted.
FAQs
1. Why do Google Pixel phones get Android features first?
Google develops Android and controls Pixel software, allowing it to introduce and optimise certain features before other manufacturers adapt them.
2. What is AOSP in Android?
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) contains much of Android's core source code, providing manufacturers with a foundation for building their own software.
3. Can Samsung Galaxy phones receive Android features without a major update?
Yes. Project Mainline and Google Play services can deliver certain updates and features independently of a full Android version upgrade.
4. Why don't all Android phones support the same features?
Features may require specific hardware, newer software, additional developer support, or manufacturer customisation that older or less powerful devices cannot provide.
5. Will new Android features eventually reach every compatible phone?
Not necessarily. Availability depends on hardware requirements, software compatibility, manufacturer decisions, regional restrictions, and rollout schedules.
