The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT), in collaboration with the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), has warned internet users about the privacy and security risks of sharing their real time locations online.
The advisory, issued as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026, highlights how location sharing can expose sensitive personal information and leave users vulnerable to cyber threats.
According to National CERT, location data reveals more than a person’s position on a map. It can provide insights into daily routines, personal habits and movements, allowing malicious actors to identify where individuals live, work and frequently visit.
The advisory also warns that location data can reveal when people are at home or away, potentially exposing them to stalking, unauthorized tracking and other malicious activities. It can also reveal social connections by showing which people an individual regularly meets.
To reduce these risks, National CERT has advised users to disable location sharing when it is not needed and regularly review privacy settings on their devices and applications.
Users have also been urged to exercise caution when sharing personal information online and offline, particularly when using applications that offer live location updates or allow location data to be shared with others.
National CERT and NTC said simple preventive measures could help protect personal privacy and improve digital safety. As part of the Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 campaign, the two organizations emphasized responsible location sharing, stronger privacy practices and greater public awareness to help build safer digital communities in Pakistan.
