Shillong, Oct 12: Two months after assuring action, the Department of Urban Affairs is yet to clarify on the alleged illegal construction of a place of worship inside the CBI campus at Mawdiangdiang, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) said on Monday.
In a fresh reminder to the Director, Urban Affairs, the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle said no inspection report, no status update and no legal action has been communicated to it since the meeting held on August 11.
The Union, through its Assistant General Secretary Celestine Rynghang, questioned whether the construction is covered under the original land agreement.
As per KSU, the agreement allows only a residential complex and office complex at the site, but ground inspection revealed a place of worship coming up inside the premises.
“This raises important questions that require clarification regarding the permissions granted, the conditions stipulated in the agreement, and compliance with the applicable laws and regulations,” the Union said.
The Union also flagged that its leaders were summoned by police over the issue even as the department has not spelt out what steps it has taken.
“The Union wishes to know whether the Department of Urban Affairs has taken the necessary legal steps regarding the said construction and, if so, what the outcome of those steps has been,” it stated.
Seeking a detailed, fact-based reply, the KSU has raised five queries — status of the assured site inspection, legality of the permission for the worship structure, whether Dorbar Shnong approval was obtained, what penal action is contemplated in case of violation, and why there has been delay in responding.
Reaffirming its stand, the KSU said it opposes any structure that violates agreement conditions and extant laws and demanded a time-bound inquiry.
Warning of escalation, the Union said if no satisfactory reply comes within a reasonable period, it “may be compelled to consider other stronger but lawful measures to highlight this issue and demand appropriate redress.”
