Arch Manning's difficult 2026 season has reached another troubling point, with former NFL running back and CBS analyst Damien Harris deciding that the Texas quarterback no longer deserves to be judged by his famous family name.
Following the Longhorns' 27-24 defeat to the Florida Gators on Saturday, October 17, Harris announced that he would refer to the quarterback simply as "Arch" until his performances improve.
President Trump wouldn’t miss the opportunity to watch Arch Manning against Tennessee
The criticism came after Texas suffered its second consecutive loss, raising fresh doubts about a team that entered the campaign with national championship ambitions.
Harris argued that Manning's reputation has created expectations that his performances have not justified.
Rather than continuing to discuss the potential associated with the Manning family, the analyst believes the quarterback should be evaluated exclusively on what he produces on the field.
“Until further notice, I’m just gonna call him Arch. Because if you take away the last name, you have a below-average quarterback. That’s what he is, and that’s how we need to evaluate him moving forward. He does not see the football field well. He does not deliver a pretty football. He is not clean in his [operation]… Mechanics don’t look good. Game management doesn’t look good. Nothing about Arch Manning’s game looks good,” Harris said on the CBS Postgame Show.
He continued his criticism by insisting that the quarterback must demonstrate improvement before earning the respect traditionally associated with his surname.
“Arch Manning isn’t playing like a Manning. He’s playing like Arch. So until further notice, he’s known as Arch. We need to stop holding on to his last name saying, ‘We’re expecting more. We want to see more. There’s potential out there.’ No. Arch is a bad quarterback right now. And until he becomes a good or a better quarterback, Arch. That’s all you’re going to get out of me. Arch.”
The comments quickly attracted attention among college football fans, many of whom agreed that Manning's background has contributed to the enormous expectations surrounding him.
Texas' latest defeat puts Manning under the spotlight
Texas had an opportunity to halt its slide against Florida, but the Longhorns ultimately suffered a 27-24 home defeat after surrendering an early advantage.
The hosts built a 17-3 lead before Florida fought back, scoring 10 points in the second quarter and adding another touchdown after halftime. The Gators then took control in the fourth quarter, extending their advantage to 27-17 before Texas mounted a late response.
Manning finished with 14 completions on 20 attempts for 173 passing yards and one touchdown.
Those numbers were not disastrous in isolation, but the quarterback's costly final possession became the defining moment of the afternoon. With Texas trailing by three points, Florida forced a fumble that allowed the visitors to secure the victory.
The result followed a 27-24 defeat against Oklahoma the previous week. Manning threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns in that game, but he also recorded two interceptions as Texas fell short.
The consecutive losses have exposed the Longhorns' inability to close out important games and increased the pressure on both Manning and head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Fans question whether Manning receives special treatment
Harris' remarks reflect a wider debate about whether Manning's famous surname has influenced the way his performances are assessed.
The quarterback is the nephew of former NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning and the grandson of Archie Manning.
His family history, combined with his highly publicized recruitment, helped make him one of college football's most closely watched prospects before he became Texas' starting quarterback.
Several fans echoed Harris' argument on social media, suggesting that a less recognizable quarterback might already be facing pressure to surrender the starting job.
“Facts. He would be on the bench if he didn’t have that last name,” one user replied.
“Finally honest evaluation I don’t think ESPN is capable of doing it because they’re scared of the last name,” another wrote.
“This right here! Too much hype but the eye test never lies,” a third declared.
Those reactions underline the growing frustration surrounding a player whose reputation has often been built around what he might eventually become.
However, the debate over his future cannot be settled by his surname alone. Texas must determine whether his struggles are the result of individual mistakes, broader offensive problems or a combination of both.
Sarkisian has indicated that the offense requires a comprehensive review following the Florida loss, leaving questions about personnel, play-calling and execution.
Manning's NFL future becomes harder to predict
The pressure also extends to Manning's professional prospects. Before the season, he was widely discussed as a potential leading candidate for the 2027 NFL Draft, with expectations fueled by his pedigree and perceived upside.
His recent performances have complicated that outlook. Through six games, Manning has thrown for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, according to his season game log.
He has shown flashes of the ability that generated excitement, including a four-touchdown performance against Texas State, but consistency remains a concern.
One possibility is that Manning could benefit from another season in college to refine his mechanics, decision-making and command of the offense. Whether that would mean returning to Texas or pursuing another route would depend on his development and future decisions.
For now, the immediate challenge is to help the Longhorns recover before their next game against Ole Miss on October 24. Another defeat would deepen the team's crisis and intensify questions about the coaching staff's ability to turn the season around.
Manning still has time to improve, but the expectations surrounding him are changing. Harris' decision to drop the family name is a deliberately provocative statement, not a definitive verdict on the quarterback's career.
Nevertheless, it captures the reality facing the Texas star: potential and pedigree can generate attention, but only sustained performances will silence the critics.
