Flying to another country to experience a sport you love can be a blast.
It can also be a hassle.
Whether it’s figuring out how to buy tickets online without getting scammed by some dodgy reseller, building an itinerary that fits as much as possible into the limited vacation time your boss gives you, or finding a group of like-minded people willing to make the trip with you, there’s a lot to figure out before you even set foot on the plane.
A Canadian company is looking to change that by offering organized sports trips overseas.
When I discovered G Adventures’ Away Games packages, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to go on what ended up being the trip of a lifetime.
The company offers a variety of soccer experiences around the world, ranging from Arsenal FC in London to Real Madrid in Spain. However, as a Manchester United fan growing up in Canada, there was only one option I was going to pick: seeing the Red Devils play live at Old Trafford.

G Adventures is a travel company that organizes trips for travellers to every continent in the world, creating authentic and fun experiences whether you’re signing up on your own or with a group.
Each trip has a CEO (Chief Experience Officer) who knows the area and can recommend where to eat, what to do and what to see, so you can kick back and enjoy the experience without having to do any additional research.
As a sports fan and avid traveller, the part that intrigues me most is its Away Games package. It’s an experience like no other, with a small group of travellers enjoying the ultimate football (soccer) experience.
Some of the key features that make this package so enticing include premium seating and hospitality access for the main match of the trip (Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc.), a lower-league game to experience both ends of the sport’s spectrum, a tour to explore what the city has to offer outside the stadium, and the opportunity to enjoy every moment alongside other like-minded football fans. Getting all of this without having to worry about the nitty-gritty details of travelling, such as hotels and transportation, makes it a stress-free experience that’s hard to turn down.
The experience

I travelled to the U.K., along with a small group of other Canadians, to experience European football for the first time. With G Adventures handling the tickets, accommodation, transportation, and experiences, I was able to enjoy the trip without having to worry about any of the logistics.
After arriving, our first full day in Manchester was spent experiencing a Football League One match between Stockport County and Leicester City at historic Edgeley Park.

Built in 1891, this stadium certainly offered an authentic English football experience.
The fact that our CEO, Grace, took care of our train and game tickets meant I got to fully immerse myself in the experience without having to worry about a thing.

The next day we had tickets to one of the biggest derbies in world football: Manchester United vs. Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Our private transportation made a quick stop at the Etihad, Manchester City’s home stadium, so we could see the blue side of the city before we witnessed the red.
G Adventures pre-booked a stadium tour at Old Trafford, giving us an inside look at the grounds and a chance to see what the stadium was like before more than 70,000 people showed up for the Premier League match.

After the tour, we headed to a Manchester United pub to grab a pint and sing a few songs, getting everyone hyped for the match.

Our tickets gave us hospitality lounge access and put us right beside United’s ultras, who sang and chanted for the entire 90 minutes. I honestly don’t know how they didn’t lose their voices, but they created an atmosphere unlike anything I had experienced before.
Working in sports, I have been privileged enough to attend the World Cup, NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA games, but I had never witnessed anything quite like this.

We spent the final day of our trip touring downtown Manchester.
Our group was guided around the city to see some of the historical sights and try some great food, including a visit to the hotel where David Beckham and Posh Spice had their first date and eating tomato soup at The Portico Library.
It was a nice change of pace to walk around the city and check out some spots I probably would have unknowingly missed if I had booked the trip myself.
If you’re a soccer fan looking to experience the game overseas for the first time, G Adventures is worth considering.
