The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has scrapped application fees for 2027 and beyond, removing an upfront cost for prospective students and making higher education more accessible.
The university confirmed the decision in a statement on Wednesday, saying its Council approved the move at an ordinary meeting on September 29, 2026.
“The decision was approved by the Council of the University,” UMP said.
UMP said application fees create unnecessary financial barriers, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
About 85% of its registered students in 2026 receive funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), underscoring the financial challenges facing many students.
The university said scrapping the fees would simplify the application process and improve access and inclusivity.
Prospective students must take note of the closing dates.
Applications for undergraduate programmes, advanced diplomas, honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas close on November 30, 2026. Applications for master’s and doctoral programmes close on January 30, 2027.
Despite removing the fees, UMP has warned applicants to be alert to scams targeting those seeking admission.
“The public is strongly cautioned against individuals who may try to exploit this decision by requesting payment in exchange for admission, application processing, preferential treatment, waiting-list placement, or student accommodation,” the university said.
“No person can guarantee admission to the university in exchange for payment.”
Applicants should use official university channels and reject requests for money in return for admission or preferential treatment.
