S-Oil has upgraded its integrated manufacturing operations management system, S-imoms, and extended it to the Shaheen complex in Ulsan. The move widens the company's digital manufacturing framework to new facilities and aims to lift plant efficiency and safety management through manufacturing data integration and generative artificial intelligence.
The company said on the 22nd that the second phase of the S-imoms upgrade has strengthened data links between its main solutions. S-imoms is S-Oil's digital transformation project that connects systems and data across plant operations — production, equipment, maintenance, inspection and safety — on a single platform. The company has used it to improve work processes and build an integrated manufacturing framework that supports decisions based on field data.
The second-phase upgrade allows equipment operation and performance information, previously scattered across separate systems, to be managed and analyzed together, giving a faster read on plant conditions. A platform that develops risk-based equipment and inspection strategies and another that streamlines on-site equipment checks by linking and integrating equipment information were also brought together, improving equipment reliability and operating efficiency.
Safety management functions were expanded as well. Change management, incident management and process hazard assessment were added to a system previously centered on digital work permits, allowing hazards across the work environment and process operations to be managed more systematically.
Generative AI was applied to the job safety analysis (JSA) function in particular. Drawing on accumulated safety data — including about 2,800 standard work hazard assessments, past incident records and injury and fatality risk factors — the function helps identify potential hazards for each task and review responses. S-Oil expects it to contribute to worker protection and accident prevention.
The company has also completed a third-phase upgrade to extend the system to the Shaheen complex. Applying S-imoms to the plant, which is preparing for commercial operation, gives it a basis for using standardized equipment and operating data from the early stages of startup. S-Oil plans to apply digital manufacturing experience built up at existing plants to the new facilities to support stable operation and efficient maintenance.
"The S-imoms upgrade and its extension to the Shaheen complex have strengthened our ability to link and use production, equipment and safety data," said Shim Hwan-seung, head of S-Oil's plant innovation and coordination division. "We will continue to make active use of data and AI to improve on-site safety and operating efficiency, and to build an intelligent workplace where employees can work more safely and efficiently."
