Boko, Oct 15: The Boko regional committee of Bir Lachit Sena Assam staged a protest at Boko Block Primary Health Centre on Wednesday, alleging medical negligence, irregularities and corruption.
The organisation demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family of Santona Boro, a pregnant woman who died on October 3. It also sought an investigation into her death and the alleged denial of medical records to her family.
Addressing residents and the media, committee president Boloram Das alleged that medical negligence caused Boro’s death and claimed that her family had not received her treatment records.
The organisation appealed to Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal to visit the bereaved family, assess its circumstances and ensure a thorough investigation. It also announced that its Boko committee would bear the future expenses of Boro’s child, expressing solidarity with the economically disadvantaged family.
Das further alleged that his wife faced a medical emergency on September 12 due to negligence by doctors at the same health centre. He claimed he had to take her to a nearby private hospital in critical condition, where doctors saved the lives of his wife and newborn child.
According to Das, he lodged a written complaint at Boko Police Station on September 13 seeking an investigation, but no action had been taken so far.
The organisation urged Raju Mech, MLA of the Boko-Chaygaon Assembly constituency, to intervene and seek an inquiry into the alleged irregularities and corruption at the health centre.
It also accused certain doctors of referring women to private hospitals for childbirth and performing surgical procedures there for financial gain. The organisation named Dr. Rumki Pal, Dr. Jayanta Das and Dr. Roma Nath Bhagawati, and demanded that they be barred from private practice. It argued that government-salaried doctors should serve through the public healthcare system, particularly given the financial constraints faced by economically weaker patients. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Responding to the allegations concerning Boro’s death, Dr. Apurba Talukdar, Deputy Superintendent of Boko Block Primary Health Centre, said she was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after her condition deteriorated and later died while undergoing treatment there.
Talukdar said the Kamrup District Health Department had initiated an inquiry and assured that appropriate action would be taken if negligence by any doctor or healthcare worker was established.
On the allegations of private practice, he asked the organisation to submit a written complaint with supporting evidence and relevant information so the matter could be examined under applicable government rules and regulations.
