Sligo’s Steven Brick is celebrating a double award success after the short film Steve’s Job, in which he stars, scooped two awards at Colofilm Fest in Enniskillen recently.
Steven received a special award for Sincerity and Authenticity in Performance, while the film itself won the festival’s Audience Choice Award, marking a memorable milestone for a project developed through the Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo.
Steven first became involved with the Hawk’s Well through Shine, the theatre’s programme providing creative and cultural opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. His relationship with the theatre later led to a job as a Promotions Assistant, helping to distribute posters and promote shows and events throughout Sligo and the county.
It was through getting to know Steven, his huge personality, infectious enthusiasm and knack for knowing (and fist-bumping) just about everyone in town, that Sligo screenwriter Ben Conway got the idea for Steve’s Job.
The film was written by Ben Conway, produced by Mariia Levko and directed by Thom Pitts. Developed through the Hawk’s Well Theatre with support from AIB, Sligo County Council and the Arts Council, Steve’s Job sees Steven play a version of himself, bringing his own experiences, humour and unmistakable personality to the screen. He stars alongside acclaimed actors Niamh McGrath, Terry O’Neill and Nigel Gallagher.

For Steven, the film has been a chance to step into an entirely new world, from helping promote shows around Sligo to becoming the star of a film now heading to the festival circuit.
Writer Ben Conway said :“Stevo has an incredible connection with the Sligo community. There’s something very special about the way he connects with people. I’m hugely grateful to the Hawk’s Well Theatre for its support in helping us bring it to life.”
The double win at Colofilm Fest is a significant achievement for Steven, whose journey has taken him from helping promote theatre shows around Sligo to starring in a film and receiving recognition for his performance on the festival circuit. The Audience Choice Award also reflects the film’s connection with audiences, with Steven’s natural warmth and personality at the heart of the story.
The awards mark an exciting new chapter for Steve’s Job, with the film set to screen again in its home county at the inaugural Hidden Tide Film Festival in November.
