Imphal, Oct 19: Two people sustained bullet injuries after unidentified armed miscreants opened fire at their car along National Highway 202 (NH-202), between Gwaltabi and Mahadev in Ukhrul district, on Sunday.
The firing occurred around 11.30 am under the jurisdiction of Litan police station. The injured were identified as Sandip Dahal, 35, and Bepanah Dahal, 29, residents of Char Hajar in Kangpokpi district.
The couple, belonging to the Nepali community, were travelling towards Ukhrul district headquarters when their vehicle came under fire. Their injuries were not serious, sources said.
In a statement, police confirmed that unidentified armed miscreants had fired at a car travelling along NH-202 between Gwaltabi and Mahadev. They said necessary security measures had been taken following the incident.
The attack comes nine days after Sandeep Rai, a member of the Nepali community, was killed in an alleged militant ambush near TM Kasom on October 10.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over civilian safety along the Imphal–Ukhrul highway.
Meanwhile, violence continued in Kamjong district along the India-Myanmar border on Sunday, with 13 abandoned houses belonging to members of the Naga community reportedly burnt down in Skipe and Pilong villages under Chassad police station, police confirmed.
Police did not specify how many houses were damaged in each village. Pilong was reportedly deserted following an attack in September in which four Naga villagers, including a father and son, were killed.
Pilong lies along the India-Myanmar border, around 35 km from Kamjong district headquarters. Skipe, another village in the district, is approximately 34 km from the headquarters and around 116 km from Ukhrul.
The identities of those responsible for the firing and arson incidents remain unknown. Police said necessary security measures had been taken in connection with both incidents.
