The caretaker Governor of Western Equatoria State, Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, has announced an amnesty for former governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba and other armed group members fighting the government.
Governor Rimbasa announced the amnesty on Monday after assuming office as caretaker governor following his appointment in September.
Speaking during his reception in Yambio, Rimbasa said the government was ready to welcome those willing to surrender peacefully, particularly former governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba.
He stressed the need to end further killings in the state.
Futuyo served as governor from 2020 to 2025 after being appointed through the SPLM-IO under the power-sharing arrangements of the 2018 peace agreement.
He reportedly fled to the bush following his removal from office last year.
Rimbasa appealed to armed individuals to lay down their weapons and contribute to restoring peace across the state.
He also called on church leaders and the Muslim community to engage armed youth and encourage them to abandon armed struggle and return to civilian life.
The caretaker governor urged those still in the bush to pursue their political ambitions through democratic means, including participating in elections and contesting for leadership positions.
He said his administration was committed to preventing further killings and creating opportunities for young people to contribute to the state’s future through peaceful political participation.
Rimbasa further called on armed group members, religious leaders and communities to work together to promote reconciliation and lasting peace in Western Equatoria State.
