Nuku'alofa, Tonga
Editor,
The delayed opening of Tonga’s new Meteorological Services and National Disaster Risk and Management Office (NDRMO) Centre at Matatoa this month, raises concerns about governance and public accountability. Reports linked the delay to questions about land-lease arrangements involving Tonga Power, MEIDECC and the Royal Estate. Although the centre has now opened, the Government should explain how the issue was resolved and confirm that legal requirements were followed. Stronger checks before construction begins would protect public funds, prevent delays and strengthen public trust in essential disaster-management infrastructure.
Yours sincerely,
