Fish traders in different markets of Agartala have reported the arrival of fresh hilsa from Bangladesh ahead of Vijaya Dashami, with prices ranging from Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,500 per kg, depending on the size of the fish.
A trader said the fish available this year was fresh and had not been kept in cold storage, unlike in previous years when stored hilsa was sold at comparatively lower prices.
According to the trader, hilsa weighing around 1.5 kg or more was priced at Rs 2,500 per kg. Fish weighing between 1.2 kg and 1.3 kg were being sold at Rs 2,200 per kg, while those weighing around 1 kg to 1.1 kg were priced at Rs 2,000 per kg. Smaller fish weighing between 600 gm and 700 gm were available at Rs 1,400 per kg.
The trader said the latest consignment of hilsa from Bangladesh had arrived a few days ago and was being sold through local traders. He did not specify the exact place of origin of the fish in Bangladesh.
“Earlier, we sold stored fish, but this time the fish is fresh,” the trader said, adding that the quality of the current stock had not prompted any complaints from buyers so far.
The higher prices this year were attributed by the trader to the availability of fresh fish rather than stock kept in storage. He expressed confidence that buyers would be satisfied with the quality despite the increase in prices.
Hilsa is among the fish sold in the markets during the festive period, and the latest arrivals have coincided with preparations for Vijaya Dashami, traders said.
