James Blackwell’s time in a Hornets jersey was so short it barely registers on the franchise timeline, yet it serves as a stark warning for any team looking to fill roster spots with undrafted hope. He played just four games during the 1994-95 season, averaging a single point and 1.3 assists per contest. Yahoo Sports notes that despite his strong college stats at Dartmouth, the NBA draft ignored him entirely in 1991. The Hornets took a shot when injuries opened a door, but the result was a quick exit after only averaging just one point per game. This isn’t a story of hidden gems; it is a tale of a journeyman who found a brief moment in the sun before fading away.
Four Games and a Quick Fade
Blackwell was 26 years old when he finally suited up for Charlotte, a late start for a point guard looking to make a mark. He had already played for eight different professional teams before landing in the Queen City, which should have raised red flags for the front office. The stats tell the whole story: 0.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in those four games. He managed to latch onto the Boston Celtics later that year, playing nine more games, but that stint marked the absolute end of his NBA career. The league is tough, and a four-game run does not build a legacy, even if the jersey number 7 is now tied to his name in the archives.
From Ivy League to Overseas Success
While his NBA career fizzled out quickly, Blackwell did not quit the game entirely. He carved out a solid path overseas, playing professionally until the 2001-02 season. Yahoo Sports highlights that he averaged 19.3 points as a senior at Dartmouth, proving he had the talent to score in college. The jump to the pros just did not work out for him in the United States. Fans often romanticize the “undrafted success story,” but Blackwell’s path shows that hard work does not always guarantee a long stay in the league. He found success abroad, but the Hornets’ experiment was over before it really began.
A Lesson for Today’s Roster Moves
The current Hornets squad is full of young talent, and the team faces big decisions about contract extensions for players like Brandon Miller. According to Yahoo Sports, Miller is seeking a five-year, $275 million deal, a massive commitment for a young wing. The front office cannot afford to waste spots on players who might only last four games like Blackwell did. The difference between Blackwell’s era and now is the financial stakes. Back in 1994, the cost of a four-game tryout was low. Today, every roster spot and every dollar counts. The team must be smarter than it was when they signed Blackwell, or they risk wasting time on players who cannot stick. Blackwell’s brief run reminds everyone that the path to the NBA is narrow, and most who try to walk it do not make it far. The Hornets need to focus on players who can stay, not just those who can suit up for a few games.
