One of the oddest plays in Notre Dame loss to BYU on Saturday was when quarterback CJ Carr fumbled a snap trying to stop the clock, as it was blown dead and later reversed to a Cougar fumble recovery, taking away the potential for points as the first half ended.
Following the game, Carr wasn’t happy with how it all went down, as all he said was “yeah, I guess,” when asked about the play. Without much detail, we really don’t know what happened on the field, but on Sunday we got some more information from the CougConnect podcast.
In a now deleted video, The Irish Tribune caught Cougar defensive lineman Justin Kirkland admitting that he called out Carr’s cadence, and the ball was snapped. The crew laughed at the situation, but if the shoe was on the other foot, they surely would have been appalled.
This is a penalty, one that is called rarely, but it’s still against the rules. Players and coaches are always searching for an advantage, and this seems to be one that favored BYU that officials missed most likely due to crowd noise. With the no call pass interference and what has been confirmed to be remaining time on the clock during Notre Dame’s final play, you can now add Carr’s fumble to the list of grievances following the conclusion of the game.
CougConnect took down the video of BYU DL Justin Kirkland admitting to the foul at the end of the first half of the BYU-Notre Dame game.
