It was a fitting image after the Atlanta Dream beat the Golden State Valkyries, 97-65, in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals at Chase Center on Monday. After the final buzzer, Angel Reese ran toward Sheryl Swoopes at courtside and gave her a hug.
It looked like a passing of the torch, as if the WNBA legend told the third-year forward: “It’s your time.”
Reese had an evening against the Valkyries to tie the best-of-seven series at 1-1, tallying game-highs of 30 points and 16 rebounds. She also had three assists and two blocks and shot 10-of-16 from the field and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe.

It was not clear what Reese and Swoopes talked about, but it was definitely encouraging for the 26-year-old star to have the support of an absolute legend.

Swoopes knows exactly what it takes to reach the mountaintop. She was a huge part of the dynastic run of the Houston Comets, capturing four straight titles from 1997 to 2000. The three-time MVP and seven-time All-WNBA was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.
Moreover, she was a three-time Defensive Player of the Year. Reese won the award for the first time this season.
Swoopes has always been a big fan of Reese, even defending the feisty forward during the peak of the national attention on her rivalry with Caitlin Clark in 2024.
After losing in Game 1, Reese vowed to be more aggressive on offense in Game 2. She stayed true to her promise, attacking the Valkyries from the outset. She had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in the first half.
Game 3 will shift to State Farm Arena on Wednesday.
