Barcelona’s recruitment plans must balance the demands of Hansi Flick’s first team with the need to secure promising young players before their reputations and transfer costs grow. The Catalans have several emerging talents already competing for opportunities, yet their recruitment department continues to monitor prospects who could strengthen the squad over the longer term.
Flick’s approach places considerable demands on his midfielders. They must press aggressively, move the ball forward quickly and react immediately when opponents regain possession. Barcelona’s established options include Pedri, Fermín López, Dani Olmo and Gavi. Any new arrival would therefore need a clear development plan rather than an immediate promise of regular first-team football.
That context makes the situation surrounding Cavan Sullivan particularly interesting. The 17-year-old American has attracted attention for his technical ability and attacking instincts at Philadelphia Union, where he continues to develop in senior football.
The main chatter
According to Sport Witness, Barcelona are monitoring Sullivan amid uncertainty surrounding Manchester City‘s agreement with the MLS club. City reached an arrangement to bring the midfielder to England when he turns 18 in January 2028, although his agent, Dan Segal, has reportedly acknowledged that the move is not guaranteed.
The reported interest comes against the backdrop of City’s ongoing Premier League financial case. However, Barcelona cannot assume that the proceedings will lead to transfer restrictions or automatically invalidate the existing agreement. Any change would depend on the case’s outcome and the terms of the arrangement with Philadelphia.
Sullivan’s output so far shows his promise with seven MLS goals and six assists during the 2026 season, alongside nine goals and 10 assists across all competitions.
Should Barcelona pursue Sullivan if City’s deal becomes uncertain?

Barcelona should keep the American on their recruitment shortlist, but they must resist the temptation to treat uncertainty at Manchester City as an invitation to overspend. Sullivan’s ability to carry the ball forward and operate between the lines could suit Flick’s attacking approach, particularly if he develops the decision-making and defensive discipline required at senior European level.
However, Pedri, Fermín, Olmo and Gavi already compete for important midfield roles. Barcelona must protect their development pathway, manage their finances and avoid promising a teenager minutes that the current squad cannot guarantee.
A sensible agreement would prioritise a manageable fee, performance-related payments and a clear route through the youth ranks. If Philadelphia demand a premium because of City’s existing arrangement, Deco should walk away rather than compromise the club’s wider recruitment plans.
