PATACHARKUCHI, Oct 23: As the Pahumara river flows gently through the autumn landscape, its banks at Medhikuchi in Bajali district came alive with the thunder of cheers, the rhythm of traditional chants and the vibrant colours of a centuries-old cultural legacy. On Vijaya Dashami, a large number of spectators gathered to witness the 122-year-old traditional boat race, reaffirming the enduring bond between nature, community and heritage.
The river, flanked by the delicate white plumes of Kohuwa flowers swaying in the autumn breeze, offered a picturesque setting for the spectacular event. Crowds lined both banks and filled the concrete bridge, transforming the riverside into a vast arena of excitement and collective celebration.
Organised by the No. 2 Medhikuchi Boat Race Management Committee, the event has remained a cherished tradition across generations, surviving the gradual disappearance of many age-old customs. According to residents, the race has a history spanning more than 121 years, while its systematic organisation has continued for nearly five decades.
“We have been celebrating this tradition without discrimination based on caste or creed, and it has greatly strengthened social unity,” said Dipul Patgiri, a member of the organising committee.
The race began at Member Ghat, with boats measuring at least 50 feet in length and carrying more than 50 rowers each. Dressed in colourful traditional attire, the rowers drove their long vessels through the river waters, synchronising their strokes to rhythmic folk chants and the beats of taal.
Among the participants, ‘Moishal Bandhu’ secured the first prize, while ‘Milanmala’ finished second.
