Selena Gomez has finally addressed years of speculation about changes to her voice, revealing that her past nicotine vaping habit has affected the way she sounds.
The singer and actress opened up about her experience in an Instagram Stories video on Sunday, October 18, admitting that she had vaped nicotine frequently and found it difficult to quit.
“I’m not gonna be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot,” Gomez said.
The 34-year-old went on to warn others about the difficulties of quitting nicotine, urging those who vape or are considering taking up the habit to think twice.
“Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it,” she said.
Gomez was candid about the effect she believes the habit has had on her voice.
“It’s so stupid. It changed my voice,” she added.
The 'Only Murders in the Building* star also responded to criticism about the way she sounds, telling listeners who are unhappy with her voice that they can simply choose not to listen.
“I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Gomez revealed that she had stopped vaping and was hoping to maintain her progress.
“I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard,” she said, before encouraging others facing similar struggles to keep going.
“I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she added.
Selena Gomez previously addressed questions about her voice
Gomez’s latest admission follows months of online discussion about changes in her speaking voice, with fans questioning her tone and delivery in interviews and social media videos.
In December 2025, the singer addressed the speculation during an Instagram Live session, saying that her throat sometimes swells internally.
“Sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all,” she said at the time.
Her latest comments offer another explanation for the changes she has noticed, although she has not detailed the extent of any lasting vocal effects.
Vaping can irritate the throat and airways, while exposure to inhaled substances may contribute to inflammation and voice changes. However, the precise cause and extent of an individual's vocal changes cannot be established from social media comments alone.
Gomez, who has previously spoken openly about living with lupus and bipolar disorder, has continued to share aspects of her personal life with fans.
Her latest admission has shifted the conversation around her voice from online speculation to a broader discussion about nicotine dependence and the challenges of quitting.
For Gomez, the message is straightforward: nicotine is difficult to give up, and she hopes her experience will encourage others to reconsider vaping.
