He chose to send warm words to Congolese rhumba icon Koffi Olomide despite a tense on-stage incident that had the internet talking.
What message did Machoka send Olomide?
Machoka, who marked 50 years in broadcasting at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on Sunday, October 18, took to Facebook to celebrate the night's musical highlights.
"When legends gather, history is made!" he wrote, going on to extend a "massive thank you" to Koffi Olomide, singer Cindy Le Coeur, and the Quartier Latin International Band for what he described as an "unforgettable performance" full of "legendary rhythm and electrifying energy."
The evening had all the makings of a landmark celebration.
Koffi and his orchestra delivered a commanding two-hour set that had the crowd on their feet, with fan favourites including Effrakata among the highlights of the night.
However, the mood shifted after Koffi wrapped up his performance. Machoka invited the Congolese superstar back onto the stage to take part in a ceremonial cake-cutting to mark the golden milestone.
Koffi appeared reluctant, raising his hands in protest before turning to walk away. Machoka followed him, seemingly attempting to persuade him to stay, but footage circulating online showed Koffi appearing to push the broadcaster away before exiting the stage entirely. Organisers and audience members were visibly caught off guard.
The friction reportedly began even before Koffi stepped on stage. He had been scheduled to perform at 10:30 pm, but the timeline was disrupted after fellow Congolese artiste Mbilia Bel and her team insisted on performing first.
The resulting delay is said to have left Koffi frustrated going into his set.
Despite the awkward turn of events, Machoka's post made no mention of any ill will, instead choosing to highlight the quality of what Koffi and his band brought to the stage.
