A 15-year-old from Ferragudo has made his mark on the international fishing scene after finishing eighth at the World Shore Angling Championships in Italy, becoming the highest-ranked Portuguese competitor.
Martim Oliveira, the reigning Portuguese champion in his age category, represented the national team at the competition held in Bologna between September 30 and October 9.
Despite adverse weather conditions, which eventually forced the cancellation of the championship, the young fisherman secured an impressive eighth-place finish in his first appearance at international level.
His achievement is particularly noteworthy given that he only began competing officially last season, immediately winning the national title and earning his place in the Portuguese squad.
Martim’s passion for fishing began at just two years old, when he first started fishing for fun in the waters around Ferragudo.
What began as a childhood pastime gradually developed into a serious sporting ambition, taking him from his home village to representing Portugal on the world stage.

Before travelling to Italy, Martim was welcomed at the Ferragudo Parish Council headquarters, where he received financial support towards the purchase of equipment needed for the competition.
During the visit, parish council president Luís Alberto wished him success and presented him with Ferragudo-branded T-shirts and a cap, ensuring that his hometown would also be represented at the event.
Martim’s eighth-place finish is a source of pride for the local community and marks another milestone in the promising sporting career of a young Algarve fisherman who has progressed rapidly from recreational fishing to international competition.
