Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) have reached breaking point in EastEnders after a huge showdown in the Queen Vic as the aftermath of Zoe’s (Michelle Ryan) death continues to send shockwaves.
Zoe tragically passed away last month after a falling into a pile of rubble and hitting her head. She died alone in her bed calling for help, with Max Branning (Jake Wood) – who ignored her pleas for assistance – having abandoned her.
In the weeks since her daughter’s death, Kat has been consumed with grief, so much so that she refuses to leave Zoe’s room.
She perked up when receiving visits from grandchild Josh Goodwin (Joshua Vaughn) but Alfie was persona non grata, with Kat being particularly vile towards him.
During tonight’s visit to the Square, Kat went out for a walk with a bottle of alcohol in hand. She proceeded to get drunk and shout abuse at Alfie – before grabbing more booze and storming off in tears.
Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) urged her to come back to his so that they could have a chat but Kat pushed him away after a momentary breakthrough, heading back to the Vic where she proceeded to cause a scene, telling everyone the drinks were free in Zoe’s honour.
Alfie, Jean (Gillian Wright) and Mo (Laila Morse) watched in despair as Kat taunted them all in a bid to hurt everyone she loves but Alfie drew the line when she accidentally hit Tommy (Sonny Kendall), ordering his wife upstairs.
Once in the living room, Kat tore the place apart, smashing everything in sight as Alfie arrived, with the stage set for the ultimate showdown between the longtime Walford couple.
What happens next in EastEnders? New spoilers for Thursday, October 15
The next episode focuses entirely on Kat and Alfie, picking directly up from tonight’s cliffhanger.
Despite a momentary reprieve at the end of the previous outing, the argument continues – and somehow it gets worse.
Given everything that Kat said and her efforts to alienate her beloved Alfie, emotions most certainly run high during the tense half-hour instalment.
And it’s safe to say that Kat and Alfie’s relationship is left hanging in the balance – but with things at a make or break stage, the question is: can they survive what’s set to be said?
Can Alfie break down Kat’s walls and help her see that he just wants to support her through the death of her beloved Zoe? Can Kat see that he too – not to mention the rest of the Slaters – are struggling?
Can they make it through this and come out stronger like they’ve done in the past? Or is this truly the end for what is easily one of EastEnders’ most iconic couples ever?
EastEnders airs these scenes Thursday October 15 at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
