US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned on Tuesday following a request from the White House amid allegations of bribery, corruption, and other misconduct, ABC News reported.
The White House "has received Ms. Guilfoyle’s formal resignation," an official confirmed later Tuesday, according to the report.
Newly appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced the administration's decision during her first press briefing on Tuesday morning.
"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," Zacharia said. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."
Guilfoyle subsequently acknowledged her departure in a post on X/Twitter, while reaffirming her loyalty to US President Donald Trump.
Guilfoyle issued a vague X/Twitter post amid her resignation as ambassador
"While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end," she wrote.
"It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve the United States of America," Guilfoyle added.
She strongly denied the allegations against her, describing them as "false" and pledging to "vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity...I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service."
Guilfoyle also expressed her "deepest heartfelt appreciation to the people of Greece for their hospitality, partnership, and welcoming me with open arms," during her tenure as ambassador.
Guilfoyle accused of offering access to Trump administration in exchange for cash
Guilfoyle has faced mounting scrutiny in recent days after reports alleged she offered Trump donor Eric Deters access to senior administration officials in exchange for financial assistance.
According to reports, Guilfoyle asked Deters to pay a $100,000 credit card bill in July 2025, just days before her Senate confirmation hearing, allegedly in exchange for helping him gain access to senior Trump administration officials.
Additional allegations include using her diplomatic position to promote private business interests, facilitating lobbying access for a Greek energy company, accepting lavish gifts, and fostering a hostile work environment.
Her conduct was also described in reports as "pushing the bounds of what is considered appropriate for a top US representative."
Guilfoyle's attorneys have rejected the allegations, maintaining that the money sought from Deters was payment for services, public appearances, and speaking engagements that predated her nomination as ambassador.
Addressing separate allegations involving travel aboard private aircraft, her lawyers said Guilfoyle “sought, obtained and followed State Department guidance and followed the Department’s travel regulations” before every trip.
“Ambassador Guilfoyle has served, and will continue to serve, with integrity, honor and distinction. We are evaluating all available legal remedies to collect this debt and any other potential causes of action,” her lawyers said.
Trump, Rubio reportedly angered by misconduct allegations
A senior administration official told the Associated Press on Monday that both Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were "extremely pissed off" over the allegations.
Rubio was reportedly particularly frustrated because he had recently visited Athens, where Guilfoyle attended all his official events and "greeted him on his arrival with a bear hug as the allegations swirled."
Trump also publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the reports on Monday when asked whether he was considering dismissing Guilfoyle.
“Well, we’re looking at it,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We’re not happy.”
The allegations have also drawn the attention of the State Department's inspector general. A US official said the watchdog was examining the claims, although the precise status and scope of any formal investigation remain unclear.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Athens previously defended Guilfoyle's conduct, saying she had "faithfully followed State Department ethics and gift reporting guidelines."
Her resignation comes amid growing calls for scrutiny of her conduct, including demands from congressional Democrats and Greek opposition politicians to investigate the allegations.
Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing, and no criminal charges against her have been reported. The allegations remain subject to scrutiny by US authorities, with questions surrounding her dealings with political donors and private business interests still unresolved.
