The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization has urged delegates at South Sudan’s Inter-Party Dialogue to adopt practical resolutions ahead of elections scheduled for December 22.
The Executive Director, Edmond Yakani, stated that the resolutions, expected to be validated on Tuesday, must promote the inclusion of all political actors and stakeholders to build consensus on conditions for peaceful, free, fair, and credible polls.
Yakani called on political leaders to evaluate the remaining timeframe and commit to executing outstanding tasks required to meet the election deadline.
He cautioned that critical preparations remain incomplete and urged delegates to make realistic assessments regarding whether necessary measures can be finalized before December.
Furthermore, Yakani advocated for the continued implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, emphasizing that the peace pact must remain integral to the post-election agenda.
Addressing international cooperation, Yakani urged delegates to support regional and international initiatives involving the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union, and the United Nations.
He stated that a proposed joint committee among the three organizations should be embraced to coordinate support for peace and stability.
While acknowledging that general elections remain a popular demand among citizens, Yakani stressed that foundational conditions must be established to ensure votes accurately reflect the public will.
He criticized political leaders for delaying the transition and warned against utilizing transitional extensions to prolong power.
Yakani noted that the current transitional period concludes on February 22, 2027, warning that failing to hold credible elections could challenge the legitimacy of the caretaker government and trigger demands for an interim administration.
